Conditions
Mr Karim has got extensive wealth of knowledge and experience in treating abdominal conditions, colorectal cancers and endometriosis
Abdominal hernias which occur when a weakness in the wall of the tummy (abdominal wall) results in some of the contents in the abdominal cavity bulging through. Some hernias need treating by performing an operation.
Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch on the gut wall connected to the large intestine. It is a medical emergency as, left untreated, the appendix can burst or perforate.
Bowel cancer is sometimes called colon or rectum cancer, colorectal cancer, or cancer of the large intestine. It is one of the most common cancers in the UK. (In contrast, cancer of the small intestine is rare.)
The endometrium is the tissue that lines the inside of the womb (uterus). Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to endometrial tissue is found outside the uterus. It is 'trapped' in the pelvic area and lower tummy (abdomen) and, rarely, in other areas in the body.
Piles (haemorrhoids) are common swellings that develop inside and around the back passage (anal canal). There is a network of small veins (blood vessels) within the lining of the anal canal. These veins sometimes become wider and engorged with more blood than usual. The swollen veins and the overlying tissue may then form into one or more swellings (piles).
IBD refers to Crohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis. Both these conditions can cause inflammation of the colon and rectum (large bowel or large intestine) with similar symptoms, such as bloody diarrhoea, etc. The exact cause isn't known but it seems that there is a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Diverticular disease and diverticulitis are conditions that affect the large intestine (bowel), causing tummy (abdominal) pain and other symptoms. They're caused by small bulges or pouches in the walls of the intestine called diverticula.
